If You Play With Fire, You’re Gonna Get Drunk – Murder by Death European Tour Blog Part 1.

~~Murder by Death are an American rock and roll band.  They are on a European headlining tour in support of their latest album “Good Morning, Magpie” – available on Vagrant Records or from their website.  They are graciously documenting their adventures for Postcard Elba.~~

Hey, Dagger here. This is the first of what will hopefully be a weekly blog about our European tour over the next month. Only three days/two shows in and there’s already tons to talk about. We’ve already run the gamut from rad to ridiculous, and there’s still four more weeks to go. Here’s how it’s shaped up so far:

Thursday May 20: Fly to Detroit at 5:15pm. Go to Duty Free in airport and buy whiskey. Get on a different plane and fly overnight to Frankfurt Germany. Drink the whiskey in flight and fall asleep to that Geoff Bridges movie “Crazy Heart”, which is basically that Mickey Rourke movie “The Wrestler” but with country music and booze instead of piledrivers and steroids (both movies have cocaine, I think).

Friday May 21:  We woke up in Frankfurt and picked up our van and gear and drove to Chemnitz. The place we went to is called AJZ. I don’t know what it stands for, but the spot was like it’s own little world. Two stages, a bar, a triangle of half-pipe skate ramps, beds&showers for bands and whoever else needs to stay there, including the three fire-dancing troupes from different towns that would be performing with us. There was tons of wall art in the place. Stuff like wicked big-breasted babe-monsters with huge muscles and pointy ears. The place is a sort of counter-culture (read: dread-locked rock&rollers/artists) mecca for the area. It’s the place responsible for the fest we played the next day.

We set up on the stage and rehearsed with the fire dancers. For five hours. The combination of jet lag and hunger made it pretty brutal, but we got a lot done and it was worth it. Sadly, I none of us got in a single game of Foosball at the table in the bar.

Saturday May 21: We drove to the nearby park-on-an-island-in-a-lake where the show was to be. The Fuego A La Isla festival was a huge succes! The fire dancers brought it while we played instrumental and sometimes extended versions of our songs. Our own set afterward was fun too. The beer tent was charging a one euro deposit on each beer bottle to be returned upon the return of your empty bottle. So, after the show tons of dudes were snatching up empties and cashing in. Murder by Death personally traded in nine bottles and got more beers with the cash.
Sunday May 22: We roll in to Beverungen for the Orange Blossom Festival and are promptly given a parking space, beers, chocolate, and a flag of the city to mount on our car door, where it’s proudly flapping in the wind right now. These guys knew how to do it. We played our set at 6:45pm and it felt great. The sound was great, the stage crew were top knotch, and the audience was excellent. And everybody there knew how to party. Next time you get a chance ask Adam about Flunky Ball, the new companion drinking game to Wizard Staff. Thanks Germany.

Until next week!

(Note – Dagan did not send any photos to go with this first entry.  So we google image searched “Fire Dancing” and this was our favorite one that came up.  We feel it accurately captures the spirit of their journey so far.)
