Talk Thursday to Me: Andrew Seward

Our friends Against Me! came to town last week for a show at Rhino’s, and we were able to sit down briefly with Andrew Seward, AM!’s bassist.  This was going to be a video interview, but with background noise and constant interruptions from well wishers, it turned out to be kind of a mess.  So enjoy the transcribed interview and some videos from the show.

Andrew Seward: It’s like we’re making a porno…

Postcard Editor: Yes, just like it…make the face

AS: This is my sex face (makes the internet meme “duckface”)

PE: Ok, good so first question, you and your wife just had a baby girl…

AS: I like how we’re going from “make your porn face” to “you have a baby girl”…

PE: Well, one does lead to the other – it’s a natural progression.  Anyway, would you support your daughter going into rock and roll or would you like her to do something different when she grows up?

AS: Oh yeah, I would totally support her.  It’d be pretty hypocritical to tell her not to.  I would warn her of all the downfalls that come along with it, but I’d also tell her about all the great stuff, because it is great.  But then I’ll just leave it up to her to make her own decision.  I’m going to be very supportive, do what you want to do, as long as she doesn’t want to join the KKK or something like that.  Might have problems then.

PE: You’re from the dirty dirty, originally from Alabama, then did some time in Nashville and of course now you live in Gainesville – what are three things you like best about southern culture?

AS: Food – everything, chicken and dumplings, fried chicken.  There’s a place in Memphis that has the best – can’t think of the name though.  Other two would be hospitality and that it’s fucking cheap.  Oh and the weather.  I love it warm, I love it stick, I love it muggy.  Swamp balls.

PE: So tonight is the last night of this tour, and then you said you were headed up to Madison to record two new songs.  What are the new songs like?

AS: One has a really…to me, just personally has a very Naked Raygun feel to it.  That’s a good thing because Naked Raygun fucking rules.  The other one I can’t describe.  It always sounds like Against Me! to me, you know?  But we’ve never made a record that sounds the same, so…we’re really going for a Blue Oyster Cult vibe on this one.

PE: A lot of cowbell?

AS: No cowbell.  Blue Oyster Cult minus the cowbell.  All played on another percussion instrument…

PE: Woodblock?

AS: No….

PE: Vibraslap?

AS: Boner.  Bonerslap.

The night continued to be less than ideal for capturing sound with our video camera as the vocals were a bit buried at the show, but here’s the crowd taking care of that by singing “Pints of Guinness Make You Strong” louder than the p.a.

And here’s “Borne on the FM Waves” featuring Ian Graham from Cheap Girls handling the duet part.

Against Me! are an American rock and roll band, and one of our favorites.  They are almost always on tour, and you can catch them next on tour with Dropkick Murphys.
