The Gloria Jones Challenge – Round 7

The Gloria Jones Challenge is our ongoing examination of the many, many, many covers of Jones’ classic Northern Soul jam “Tainted Love” – to see how they stack up compared to the original.

Today’s challenger gives the song the old classic two voices/two ukuleles treatment.

But first, of course, the original.

And now, The Re-Entrants version.

Postcard ChaCha: A little kitschy (but really, who’s counting when The Re-Entrants have also covered Sweet Child O Mine and Highway to Hell) but a lot of fun, these dudes seem to specialize in covering songs that would normally be deemed completely inappropriate for the ukulele. Which makes me happy. They’re ability to never, ever take themselves too seriously and have fun is kind of infectious (note the crowd singing-a-long in the live version of this) and it seems their fans obviously enjoy having many beers and drunkenly joining in. I fully support this.

Postcard Editor: Man…Right Said Fred have really let themselves go.  That being said, I support this new direction they’re taking musically.  It’s cute and novel and I dig it as a nice wholesome palette cleanser from last week’s sleaze fest from Marilyn Manson.
