The Gloria Jones Challenge is our ongoing examination of the many, many, many covers of Jones’ classic Northern Soul jam “Tainted Love” – to see how they stack up compared to the original.
Today’s challenger gives the song the old “all pop songs are punk songs if you speed them up and play them with distortion” treatment.
But first, the original by which all challengers are judged – and because we haven’t switched it up in a while, here’s a Tom n’ Jerry fan video for the song – simply proving how odd YouTube can be.
And now the challenger – Shades Apart, in what may be the most low rez video in all of the YouTube library.
Postcard Editor: A perfect version for the onset of spring, when old men like myself think back to their younger days filled with punk rock serenades to unattainable young ladies, mic stands made out of hockey sticks, reading Korean but not knowing what it means, and of course the film Roxanne. Of course I’m mostly talking about the video, but the song captures that same sort of rush of youthful optimism, and today I’m digging the hell out of it.
Postcard ChaCha: Meh. Maybe I had too much ice cream at the sundae party, but this does absolutely nothing for me. I can certainly appreciate the bassist, who got possibly the shortest solo ever recorded and the drummer is definitely rocking. It’s kind of nice to see the kids covering this classic, but it probably would have been better left undone.
