The Gloria Jones Challenge – Round 10

The Gloria Jones Challenge is our ongoing examination of the many, many, many covers of Jones’ classic Northern Soul jam “Tainted Love” – to see how they stack up compared to the original.

Today’s challenger translates the song into Spanish, giving it the kind of awesome title “Falso Amor.”

But first, as always, the original.

And now, the challenger – Alejandra Guzman

Postcard Editor: Overall this version leaves me underwhelmed and longing for more.  While a Latin version of this song could be amazing, especially if it translated it via more traditional genres like samba or flamenco, this one comes off as a watered down version of Marilyn Manson’s version of the song.  Guzman has a good rock voice, but it stays safely in the arena rock/alt. metal territory of predictability.  Lacking personality, but not as offensive as other versions I’ve heard, so this one goes firmly in the middle of my pack.

Postcard ChaCha: Is it a man, is it a woman? Maybe it’s the Nyquil, but I’m having trouble with this one. Who made spanish metal drink the pop kool-aid? No mas por favor.
