Virgil’s Beer of the Week

Our good friend Virgil Dickerson from Suburban Home Records returns with another pick for our weekly segment known so beautifully and simply as: Virgil’s Beer of the Week.

This week Virgil discusses Avery Brewing’s Maharaja.

This week, I bring you Avery Brewing’s Maharaja, a Double IPA/Imperial IPA. This beer is absolutely huge. From the moment I cracked open the bottle, the aroma of citrusy hops just hits you. Throughout the years, I’ve become quite the hop head so the first taste didn’t disarm my palette like it might for others. Other than a huge hop profile, there is an overwhelming amount of grapefruit. Being a huge fan of grapefruit, it’s no wonder I love this beer so much. For a beer that is over 10 percent alcohol and over 100 IBUs, the beer is surprisingly smooth and well balanced. While I am not sure the chronology of Avery’s double IPAs, it’s not often that a brewery makes 2 different double IPAs. I’d love to drink both double IPAs side by side and would love to know how it came to be that they decided to make a 2nd double IPA. For a brewery that crafts so many delicious beers, Maharaja stands as one of their most delicious.

Contest: Like I’ve done before, I offer up a contest whereby you guess what pint glass is in the photo next to the Avery Brewing’s Maharaja. Correctly guess the glass and you can win a record of your choice from Suburban Home Records. Good Luck. Send your answers to postcardeditor@gmail.com. One lucky winner will be drawn at random from the correct guesses.

If you want to send me beer for a future review, my address is 2000 Wadsworth Blvd #138, Lakewood, CO 80214.
