The Gloria Jones Challenge – Round 21

The Gloria Jones Challenge is our ongoing examination of the many, many, many covers of Jones’ classic Northern Soul jam “Tainted Love” – to see how they stack up compared to the original.

Today’s challenger runs the song through the paces of everything that is wrong with music today. Enjoy!

We Never Asked For This: John Gold

We Never Asked For This is our short review of a band who thought (or their label/manager/agent/girlfriend thought) that it would be a good idea to send us an email saying “like me! like me! like me!” (more or less).

Today’s blind submission is A Flower In Your Head from John Gold.

This Day in Music History (Sort Of)

Today is the birthday of a one Mr. Neil Patrick Harris, who many people know and love as Doogie Howser, Barney from How I Met Your Mother and of course being hilarious and charming in various hosting and guesting gigs over the years. But for us his pinnacle role, and perhaps the pinnacle of humanity itself, was in the Joss Whedon web-series Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Up there with Hedwig and the Angry Inch for one of our favorite musicals (seriously) we’re excited to have an excuse to post about it.  Entire series below, thanks to dedicated YouTube person KarikiNeroli.

Various Re-post-ions: James Sheeley

Our good friend Jason Sheeley runs The Hillbilly Beast, and on occasion we’re going to let you know about his most recent musical musing and super cool song pick.

We can always count on Jason to bring to light a cool track that we were otherwise oblivious to, but this post from last year just might take the cake on that. A recording of Jason’s grandpa James listening to a tape of himself singing a Jimmie Rodgers song and commenting on it and about the woman he was dedicating it to, Loraine. A fascinating little slice of real americana and the way old songs stay with us and get passed down.  Check it out here.
