As you may have noticed, we’re not posting much lately – this is due to it being summer and the outdoors being a lot more awesome than the indoors, but we know our responsibility to keep bringing you the important stuff – so once again here’s our good friend Virgil Dickerson from Suburban Home Records, with another pick for our segment known so beautifully and simply as: Virgil’s Beer of the Week.
This week, Virgil brings you Deschutes Black Butte Porter XXIII.
Black Butte Porter on its own is a really solid beer, but each year, Deschutes makes a very special variation. I first encountered this delicious seasonal beer 2 years ago. That beer was one of my favorites of the year. For some reason, I never got around to getting a bomber of Black Butte Porter XXII. This past week, my local liquor store got in a few cases of the XXIII and you have no idea how delighted I was. This special beer is their Porter with the zest of Spanish Orange peels, Cocoa Nibs, Pasilla Negra Chiles, and 25 percent of the beer is aged in bourbon barrels. While I missed the Ethiopian espresso that was added in XXI, this combination is definitely award winning. The orange zest adds a nice element to the beer that you pick up on after each drink. The beer tastes huge with all of those flavors. At nearly 11 percent alcohol, this is definitely a big beer. Highly recommended.
This Week’s Contest: Like I’ve done before, I offer up a contest whereby you guess what pint glass is in the photo next to the Deschutes Black Butte Porter XXIII. Correctly guess the the name of the beer on the pint glass and you can win a record of your choice from Suburban Home Records. Good Luck. Send your answers to email@example.com. One lucky winner will be drawn at random from the correct guesses.
If you want to send me beer for a future review, my address is 2000 Wadsworth Blvd #138, Lakewood, CO 80214.
