Rearview Mirror – Postcard Elba

Rearview Mirror is our annual look back at the year in music from our friends in and around the business.  Musicians, managers, roadies, superfans, bloggers etc..

This year we’re upping the vanity aspect of it by sprinkling in our favorite posts of the past year, which you may have missed the first time around. Our pick for August was our local bass man Alex Mann (Medusa, The Hollows, Racebannon, Whippoorwill, Austin Lucas) talking about the historical importance of perhaps the ultimate bass man, James Jamerson. Personal and knowledgeable it’s a great reminder of Jamerson’s talent. Check it out.

This Day in Music History – Alex Mann on James Jamerson

It was this day in 1983 that Motown bassist and the architect of some of pop music’s most memorable grooves, James Jamerson passed away. Here to tell us what JJ meant to him is Alex Mann, bassist in such musically diverse groups as The Hollows, Medusa, Whippoorwill and Deep Tan & The Frosted Tips.

Where The Internet Took Us

For those followers of the blog who live outside of the greater Bloomington area – we urge you all to check out our friends The Hollows via live interweb streaming as they appear tonight on WFHB’s “Local Live” program. The band will perform 6 songs, mostly from their upcoming EP, and chat a bit with the DJ from 9:30pm to 10:00pm EST.

You can check out that stream right here, and for those of you in the greater Bloomington area who want to listen on your totally sweet hi-fi Kenwood system from the 70’s with dual-band radio receiver, you can tune in to 98.1FM or 91.3FM. Pre-game in style by checking out The Hollows excellent first album Darlings of Naught here, and all of our Hollows related content (including an interview with main Hollow Kate Long) right here.

Cruelly mocking the peanut allergic.

The 2010 year in musical reviews continue to trickle in, and never let it be said that we don’t share our trickles.  Far from it.  Take our trickles, we insist.

Today’s recap comes from Christian Rutledge who gives us an interesting look at a year through the eyes of professional sideman.  Known for rocking the drums for Throwing Stars, Christian has also wracked up plenty of paradiddles with other bands of note.  Check it out yo!

Rearview Mirror – Heath Byers

Christmas colors. Horrifying, horrifying Christmas colors.

The flashbacks continue!  Today’s post is from Heath Byers – co-owner of independent record shop Landlocked Music, one half of soul-funk DJ duo The Mother Truckers and occasional member of the Early Day Miners traveling rock and roll show in some unspecified but undoubtedly crucial role.

You can read Heath’s picks on many things 2010 related at Landlocked’s site, but our favorite was his list of the best live performances he saw in 2010.  Mostly for the January one.
